Dangerous Allergies

For some people, an allergy is as simple as sneezing around pets, flowers or dust. For others, it can be a life-threatening disorder. Over the course of many years, countless people have died from anaphylactic shock due to bug bites, food allergies, and so on. As a result, many other people were forced to severely limit their lives and activities. When confronted by an allergic reaction, they had to take medication – quickly. The process was long and involved: get a syringe, draw the proper amount up into it, swab their arm or leg with alcohol, and then insert the needle and push the plunger. This might seem simple, but when you’re in the throws of anaphylactic shock, every second is vital, and you can pass out within minutes.
In the early 1990’s, that all changed. It was then that the self administering injection pen was developed; quite the marvel of mechanical engineering. The device – as the name implies – is only slightly larger than a pen; thus anyone can easily carry one with them anywhere. It has a sterilized retractable needle, a syringe with a prepared dose of medicine in it, and a small control mechanism. At the first sign of distress, the patient takes out the pen, places it against their leg or arm – right over a blood vessel – and presses the trigger. The device then jabs the needle into them, and injects the medicine. As the device is only used in emergencies, and the needle is sterilized, the lack of an alcohol wipe on the skin is not a problem; the risk of infection is negligible.
Given the injector pen’s small size and simple construction, it is not very expensive to produce; thus just about anyone can afford them, and most insurance companies are willing to pay for them.
With the widespread distribution of these devices, countless people have been given the freedom to lead fuller and richer lives. Now, people with all manner of allergies need no longer be forced to avoid potentially dangerous situations. Also, the injector pen has been given wider uses; diabetics can use it to give themselves an emergency shot of insulin, if they get into a situation where their blood sugar is going too high. For people dealing with chronic medical conditions, the injector pen is a vital part of our modern society, and a real boon to leading a happy and productive life.
